Tech Education Progress Amidst Tragedy

Progress in Haiti just took another giant leap forward!

DreamRoot recently delivered 6 Dell desktop computers to the school led by local leaders Rose and David in Les Cayes, bringing the school’s total computer count at the DreamRoot Haiti Resource Center to 10 computers.

The Reality of Development Work

Development work in underserved communities and developing countries comes with unique challenges. Infrastructure is often lacking, systems can be inconsistent or nonexistent, and the realities and “rules of the game” shaped within these contexts are very different from what many of us are used to in more developed environments. The setbacks and resistance are real. The case with these computers is no different.

Due to the challenges of accessing and purchasing these types of computers within Haiti, we coordinated with Rose and David to ship them from the U.S. Their arrival in April was delayed by three months due to a devastating plane crash. The computers were originally scheduled for a volunteer cargo flight that tragically crashed into the mountains near Cayes, claiming the lives of two pilots from the AGAPE organization.

The computers were only spared because the manifest was full that week, pushing them to the next flight. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the preciousness of life and the interconnectedness of the global society as a whole…. not just the supply chain. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those lost.

More Than Computers

Even in the midst of tragedy and adversity, the work continues. These computers now represent more than equipment alone. They represent sacrifice, opportunity, resilience, and hope for the future. It also reminded us why this work matters so much. It is ultimately about people, lives, and future generations.

As the school expands into high school grades, students now have greater access to digital literacy, Microsoft Office training, research tools, and technology skills that will help prepare them for future education and career opportunities.

What makes this especially meaningful is that this journey started 6 years ago with just a few tablets introduced into classrooms through DreamRoot donor support. Today, that early investment has grown into a thriving technology initiative that is helping bridge the digital divide for hundreds of students.
